The city of Trapani is the treasure chest that holds Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings, churches and castles that frame a breathtaking panorama overlooking one of the most beautiful seas in the world. The oldest core of the city cuts the sea in two, like a scythe. This is precisely the origin of its name from the Greek Drepanon. And the sea for Trapani has been the most important element, always a crossroads of people and trade. Its past as a flourishing city of the Mediterranean has left, today, a city rich in monuments, noble palaces, churches of great historical value, majestic convents located on a monumental peninsula to be discovered on foot, surrounded by the blue of the sea, in which a special light meets the golden stone of buildings with multiple layers of epochs and dominations.
Trapani’s astronomical clock is one of the oldest astronomical clocks in Europe. It dates back to 1596 and is located at Porta Oscura in the historic center.
Formed by two circular dials, of the Sun and the Lunar, embellished with lead and bluestone inserts, it marks the 24 hours, the motion of the Sun around the houses of the Zodiac, the equinoxes, solstices and the alternation of the seasons.
Torre Ligny is the Spanish watchtower built in 1671 to strengthen coastal defense. Placed on the extreme tip of Trapani’s coast, it is mirrored where the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sicilian Channel meet.
From Torre Ligny it is also possible to admire the Egadi Islands, the entire coastline up to the slopes of Mount Erice and the Colombaia Castle, also known as the Castle of the Sea.
The Botteghelle gate belongs to the walls of the northern coast of Trapani, known as Mura di Tramontana. Originally through this gate there was access to a small Jewish cemetery, located outside the city walls.
Today the Botteghelle gate gives its name to the urban beach with white sand washed by a crystal clear sea.
The Church of the Anime del Purgatorio, also known as the Church of the Mysteries, represents a real treasure for the city of Trapani. It houses sculptural groups depicting the Passion and Death of Christ, symbolic of Trapani’s important Easter celebration. The church is considered a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque art, and there are extraordinary works that testify to the great artistry of the master sculptors of the time.
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is one of the most beautiful and splendid Baroque churches to be discovered in the city of Trapani, with a beautiful portico consisting of three arches and a cross-shaped plan, with three different naves and four side chapels.
Several works can be admired, such as the Altarpiece of the Martyrdom of San Lorenzo, or the statue The Dead Christ by Tartaglia.
The Church of San Francesco Di Assisi, built in the 13th century, is characterized by a marked monumentality, with its large dome towering above all other buildings constitutes a topographical landmark in the monumental landscape of Trapani’s historic center.
Its Latin-cross plan has four chapels arranged longitudinally along the nave, and a valuable element are the eleven statues of the Moral Virtues by Cristoforo Milanti.
The villino takes its name from the Trapani minister Nunzio Nasi, who was its owner. Designed by engineer Giuseppe Manzo in 1898, the building is characterized by the originality of its rusticated ashlar cladding.
The small villa, which also includes a private chapel in Art Nouveau style, is located on a thin tongue of land in a charming state-owned area known as Lo Scoglio, which is reached by walking down a long avenue.
The Lazzaretto was born as a place of isolation for those infected with infectious diseases who landed at the port of Trapani, and for this reason it was built on the islet of St. Anthony, which housed an ancient church dedicated to this saint.
Its structure started in 1831 at the behest of Lieutenant General G. B. Fardella was functional for isolation, with a semicircular inner courtyard overlooked by quarantine quarters. Remaining in operation until 1885, it is now the local headquarters of the Italian Naval League.
The Tramontana Walls in Trapani are an incredible archaeological and historical testimony to the city. These walls testify to the ancient defensive perimeter created during Spanish rule in Trapani. These walls are not only an important defensive element, but also provide a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the authentic atmosphere of the period. Spanning various areas, they offer a glimpse into a fascinating part of Trapani’s history. It is therefore a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Trapani.
In the 15th century the palace was a town hospital, but between the late 16th and early 17th centuries it was remodeled, at the behest of Captain Lucatelli, whose features can be recognized in the bust, located in the niche outlined by volutes on the facade. Modifications related to the project, by distinguished architects of the time, date back to the 18th century.
The palace has fifteenth-century origins and is also named Cavarretta after the Hierosolymitan mìles who contributed his two thousand scudi to the completion of the facade (17th cent.). The palace is a historical site of the events of the transition to the Kingdom of Italy: from its balcony, in fact, Giuseppe Garibaldi delivered his speech during his visit to Trapani.

A historic place where dozens of fishermen would gather to give life to the picturesque fish market, today’s Fish Market Square is an echo of tradition and monumentality.
Geographically, the square turns out to be connected on the left to the “mura di tramontana,” a stretch of paving that runs along the shoreline as far as Porta Ossuna, an ancient gateway to the historic center, and on the right to the shoreline bordering on the Erice. Also on the right is a flight of steps that allows a descent to a cliff.
The Fountain of the Saturn has 14th-century origins; it was built at the behest of the Chiaramonte family in order to distribute water in the urban center of Trapani, thanks to the aqueduct they had built. Its Baroque elements were enriched by the presence of a statue of the god Saturn, a deity who in Antiquity presided over the protection of Trapani. Water gushes from three large fish and pours into a large shell and from it into three smaller shells that rest in turn on three monstrous heads that flow into a larger pool.
With a history that probably dates back to the First Punic War, the Colombaia Castle is a fascinating fortress surrounded by the sea, standing on a small island at the eastern end of the harbor, part of an imposing and necessary defensive apparatus, as indicated by its octagonal tower incorporated by the 15th-century fortress. Under Charles V the castle defended the town from pirate raids; in the Bourbon era, almost up to the threshold of the Kingdom of Italy, the Colombaia was used for prisons, and this use persisted until the 1960s.
